We are back for another exciting episode of RTF Podcast. It seems as though the tennis world even during the midst of a global pandemic, cannot be quiet. So to make sense of all the mess and madness of the tennis world, we invited Dr. Adia Benton (@ethnography911), PhD Social Anthropology, Harvard 2009 AND A HUGE TENNIS FAN. Dr. Benton is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at Northwestern University, where she is affiliated with the Science in Human Culture Program. Her first book, HIV Exceptionalism: Development Through Disease in Sierra Leone, won the 2017 Rachel Carson Prize, which is awarded by the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) to the best book in the field of Science and Technology Studies with strong social or political relevance.
Her body of work addresses transnational efforts to eliminate health disparities and inequalities, and the role of ideology in global health. In addition to ongoing research on public health responses to epidemics, including the 2013-2016 West African Ebola outbreak, she has conducted research on the growing movement to fully incorporate surgical care into commonsense notions of “global health.” Her other writing has touched on the politics of anthropological knowledge in infectious disease outbreak response, racial hierarchies in humanitarianism and development, the business of professional sports, and techniques of enumeration in gender-based violence programs. She has a PhD in social anthropology from Harvard University, an MPH in international health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and an AB in Human Biology from Brown University. She has held a postdoctoral fellowship at Dartmouth College and visiting positions at Oberlin College and in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
We discussed the enigma that is Covid-19, the global and American response specifically and of course what the hell went on at the Adria Tour. It was fun and informative and a pleasure speaking with Dr. Benton.
***Want to say thanks to Dr. Benton for taking time out of her life to be a guest on this episode***

In episode 8, we continue with Harry and the Goblet of Fire (Part 2), we deal with the mayhem at the Quidditch World Cup right up to the First Task of the Triwizarding Tournament. It is clear we are moving from the personal to the politics of the magical world. We get into the activity of muggle baiting and the blood politics. We have a new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher and the question of ethics in the magical world is up for discussion. We are again given insight into the magical judicial system and the picture is not pretty at all. How does this Goblet of Fire really works and what is a magical contract? All this and more.

In episode 7, we are onto Book 4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, one of the larger books in the series. Like we suspected, this one is going to take more than 2 episodes and decided that our approach should be broken based on chronological chapter layout instead of purely themes. For this episode, we get into the details of Riddle House and its limited history. We are back at the Dursleys and their continued abuse of Harry as they deal with the unavoidable facts of Dudley's diet. We get into the magical elements at the Burrow as well as at the Quidditch World Cup. Is magic really functional in this world especially in light of the surrounding politics of this world? We get into the weeds.

So we are BACK and I know you missed us especially during this very trying time. We not only have to deal with a pandemic but racism not to be outdone, decided that it wanted to be front and center in the American discourse. For this episode, we brought out Howard Bryant (@hbryant42), sports writer, journalist and commentator to help us frame this discussion on activism in sports and the larger implications for society writ large.
We had a very spirited discussion on Colin Kaepernick as well as potential activism in professional tennis as it pertains to race/racism. What does this look like for black players on tour?
***Want to say thanks to Howard for taking time out of his life to be a guest on this episode***

****We appreciate you taking time out of this chaotic world to listen and discuss these books with you. This was a tough episode to record. We know, understand and feel the pain of systemic racism, police brutality and impunity, racial injustice, capitalism, the oppressive forces of the isms as well as their intersections of them all in and on our lives. We know, understand and feel your frustration. In these times, we can only encourage you to be kind to yourself and others, do what you can to be a positive change in the world and READ. READ and ENGAGE with the works of the great writers (Baldwin, Lorde, Davis, Morrison et al) who have come before us and with us now. The writers (Cesaire, Fanon, King, Anand Giridharadas @AnandWrites et al) who demand that power and capitalism be held accountable for the lives that they destroy. Remember, PEOPLE over PROFITS and when BLACK LIVES MATTER (in all forms, female, male, straight, able-bodied, disabled, gay, bi, trans, queer et al) then all lives matter *****
In our 6th Episode, we conclude Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. We get into Prof. Trelawney and how effective a teacher she is, if a teacher at all. We discuss the magical implications of the predicting the future when one is able define structural and elemental conventions. Past, present trust and friendships collide in the Shrieking Shack as Harry is again confront with a history that is determining his future but is hardly present for him now. And what of this traveling back to the past? We also delve into some of the plot potholes that we find in the text. As always, we welcome suggestions, comments, criticism, praise, questions and nuanced insights. Be warned that there might be some cuss words but we will strive to never go beyond PG-13 rating. NB That this episode is be available on YouTube and thus easier to comment
